Chris De Burgh has a song in his album which features: The Lady in Red ; about living in a Seaside Town Off Season. There is something about the wildness of the sea in Thanet in Winter; which reminds you the evenings are for rest and recharging. Going to earth like a sensible fox!
Tracey Emin’s Student’s Exhibition; which she has carefully curated interspersed with works by celebrated artists; has even lured Madonna to Margate – Off Season.
Madonna has lured more of the fashionable to our cold salt whipped shores; describing Margate as her version of heaven. News to all of us who cling limpet like to Margate’s rocks off season; grateful for electricity and constant hot water, and our cats curled up on our beds, our sofas and any convenient cranny near the radiator. Tracey Emin is clearly fond of cats as well as fighting for Margates economy, and sprucing up many of our neglected buildings.
So back to Imbolc…this is a time when the trees start to dream of Spring. The catkins on the birch trees, and the alder trees are still hard and clenched smooth… not thinking of unfurling to release their pollen; whilst the wind lashes them, and raindrops would wash away their precious yellow magic before it can bless the wind; and be pollinated by tiny red star like male flowers. The sap is starting to rise, birds are greeting their long faithful mates or singing their loudest chart toppers to call in their dream lovers.
So as a Fortune Teller, I remind you to start to pencil in your Summer Diaries… choose where you will put your energies; and dream big.
